Longhorns vs Rice. FINAL 34 to 17. GO LONGHORNS!!! (70,445 fans cant be wrong)
Excerpts from: ESPN
• The Longhorns went scoreless in the first quarter and were down 3-0 before scoring 24 unanswered points.
– ESPN Stats & Information
Texas was stopped on fourth down at the 1-yard line on their first drive and settled for a 51-yard field goal on the second after another stalled drive. Gilbert bounced a few passes, but showed pinpoint accuracy on others, including a 47-yard throw to Malcolm Williams in the third quarter. He finished 14 of 23 for 172 yards.
Texas finally got going on its first full drive of the second quarter taking a 10-3 lead on a 1-yard touchdown run by Newton. He ran up the middle and just out of reach of the outstretched arms of two Rice defenders for that score.
That drive was fueled by a 22-yard catch and run by Marquise Goodwin, a play where the Longhorns finally seemed to find a rhythm. The Longhorns gained just 53 yards in the first quarter, but piled up 69 on their first touchdown drive.
250-pound Cody Johnson had trouble early. But overall Johnson had 15 carries for 59 yards.
Rice’s first touchdown came on a fluke play. McHargue’s pass bounced off the hands of Vance McDonald and right into the arms of Randy Kitchens. Kitchens had a step on Christian Scott, but Scott grabbed his leg and hung on as Kitchens dragged him to the goal line for the 47-yard score which made it 24-10 just before halftime!!!
Rice’s Sam McGuffie had 14 carries for 47 yards.
McHargue was 6 of 11 for 90 yards and an interception and Rice also used Nick Fanuzzi, who had 23 yards passing.
Texas kicker Justin Tucker made a 51-yard field goal early in the second quarter and one from 26 in the fourth, but missed field goals of 54 and 44 yards in the third quarter.
McCoy’s younger brother Case McCoy took over at quarterback with about six minutes remaining. He attempted one pass.
The only turnover by the Longhorns came late in the fourth quarter when Aaron Williams fumbled a punt which was recovered by Rice at the Texas 20. The Owls took advantage of that mistake three plays later when Charles Ross scored on a 2-yard run.
Way to go Longhorns!!!
What is Labor Day? a message from The Murph
by Julie Jeffcott and her faithful lab/dauchsen mix, Murphy.
What happens on September 22, 2010? Answer at the end!
During the day, lately it has been in the evening hours, I go for a walk to clear the cobwebs from between my ears and reflect on the day’s events. Of course I take my mistress along so she can make sure that I do not get into trouble. She does all of the talking saying hello to everyone we meet. I greet everyone with a big smile, a wagging tail and a short romp with the other dogs.
While she was visiting with a friend yesterday, I overheard her say that we were going to attend a Labor Day Cook Out. Of course at the mention of food, I became interested. What is Labor Day? After some research on my Puppy Pad, I found out exactly what Labor Day means.
This coming weekend is Labor Day Weekend 2010 and the actual date itself for Labor Day is on Monday September 6. Many people view Labor Day weekend as the last chance to get out and about before the colder weather comes, a time to have a family get-together but it’s also important to remember why we have Labor Day in the first place.
The day was initiated as a way to celebrate the achievements of American workers and how their hard work made this country great. The day goes right back to 1882 on September 5 in New York City and was organized by the Central Labor Union and the idea of a ‘workingmen’s holiday’ slowly spread to other states, increasing with the rise of labor organizations
This Labor Day turn on the sprinkler and sip some lemonade, but don’t forget to give a toast to those who made it possible. Without them, there would be no standard of 8 hour workdays and minimum wage! So whatever you plan on doing to celebrate this week end, remember to hydrate and if you take your pets with you carry a jug of water for them. We need to hydrate too!
And, remember, Murphy loves you.

Zoot Restaurant – Where food and the heart become one
Stewart, one of the owners, opened the gateway of our senses with a wine that would make my father cry. He teaches that wine is not just a beverage, but a food worthy of attention. When our first course arrived, the tender, sweet and sour duck risotto beautifully engaged the spices of the German wine translated in English simply as 1-2-3.
The food continued to surprise us with simple presentation (no salt nor pepper offered and neither were wanted) and robust flavor one would expect when dining with Royalty. (In other words, their food doesn’t suck.)
The atmosphere lends itself to the comforts of home with the modern accouterments of an upscale bistro. Relationship between owner and staff, owner and guests, staff and guests… all were as harmonious as the relationship between the seasonal fresh edibles and the superbly selected grape.
Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing pretentious inside ZOOT. Although you’ll see a slightly higher bill at the end of your remarkable meal, the investment is worth it. You will look forward to the next time you treat yourself and your senses to the sweet balance of light, beauty and culinary greatness.
PS – Stewart Scruggs and Mark Paul also own WINK downtown.
PPS – Look for deals at Groupon (click in the right margin). I read where someone paid $30 for a $55 5 course dinner at Zoot. They bought 4 and invited the family out for a wonderful multi-course dinner last May.
Back to school safety tips from The Murph
Woof! Woof!
Summer vacation is over and all the kids are off to school. Every day these happy friends make their way to and from school either by walking, riding bikes or scooters, the school bus or driven by parents. The traffic can be a nightmare and the risk to kids safety enormous. Pass these reminders on to you little ones, so that they will return safely home and play with me (or your version of me).
- Map out with your child a safe route to walk to the bus stop or to school. Point out places to avoid along the way, busy intersections, vacant lots, construction areas and parks where there aren’t many people around.
- Stress the importance of crossing streets at crosswalks or intersections with a Crossing Guard. Crossing guards can be your best friend going to and from school.

- Have your child walk to school or the bus stop with friends or a sibling. Also, no rough housing at the bus stop OR in the crosswalk.
- Remind your child not to talk to strangers, not to go with strangers no accept gifts from strangers and to let them know whom to tell (police, crossing guard, school).
- Have your child memorize your phone number and address. Write down other important numbers on a card tucked in his or her book bag for your child to carry.
After another great safety day, when the kiddos return home, we can play catch and run in the yard while they can tell me all about they learned and the silly things that made them laugh.
And, remember, Murphy loves you.
