Zoot Restaurant – Where food and the heart become one
Stewart, one of the owners, opened the gateway of our senses with a wine that would make my father cry. He teaches that wine is not just a beverage, but a food worthy of attention. When our first course arrived, the tender, sweet and sour duck risotto beautifully engaged the spices of the German wine translated in English simply as 1-2-3.
The food continued to surprise us with simple presentation (no salt nor pepper offered and neither were wanted) and robust flavor one would expect when dining with Royalty. (In other words, their food doesn’t suck.)
The atmosphere lends itself to the comforts of home with the modern accouterments of an upscale bistro. Relationship between owner and staff, owner and guests, staff and guests… all were as harmonious as the relationship between the seasonal fresh edibles and the superbly selected grape.
Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing pretentious inside ZOOT. Although you’ll see a slightly higher bill at the end of your remarkable meal, the investment is worth it. You will look forward to the next time you treat yourself and your senses to the sweet balance of light, beauty and culinary greatness.
PS – Stewart Scruggs and Mark Paul also own WINK downtown.
PPS – Look for deals at Groupon (click in the right margin). I read where someone paid $30 for a $55 5 course dinner at Zoot. They bought 4 and invited the family out for a wonderful multi-course dinner last May.
Pizza in Lakeway… Pizza Hut offers great service!
Pizza Hut still has “it” even after all these years.
John Russell, General Manager in Lakeway, handles his customers with professionalism, courtesy, and down right genuine hospitality that one might expect from the Driskill or Stephen F. Austin Hotels downtown.
Thanks John. I’m at peace knowing that when I order a pie, you make it right, every time.

Brenham, fun for the whole family
Longing for an adventure? Lavish your senses in an unforgettable experience. The annual “Grape Crush for Fun” at Pleasant Hill Winery near Brenham, Texas. Follow it up with dinner at Volare Italian Restaurant in Brenham, for a mini “Italian” adventure without the jet lag. Go alone or take a friend. Either way you’ll have a good time. Buona Fortuna!
From Austin, Pleasant Hill Winery is about a 90-minute drive. But it’s worth it!
Zinger’s: Game Time at Dinner
We heard about a great new place called Zinger’s. Since a Zinger was my favorite childhood snack (Chocolate Zingers from Hostess) I thought it would be a great idea to check things out.
Zingers has a lot of things going for it… especially for a family. We have adults, and we have kids, so there are a lot of varied interests. At first glance Zingers is somewhat of a sports bar, but don’t let that hold you back. Zingers has great food at great prices. The big ol’ bar features drinks of ever kind. Many flat screen TVs including one huge one to watch soccer, football, or whatever. The place is loaded with table-side games (you have to put $ money in, but they are fun and inexpensive). Our table was right by the Wii and Rock Band making dinner and play a total blast!
Outdoor and indoor seating (of course) plus Thursday night music on the lawn (at least, during the summer). Since it is located right on the main drag of the Galleria, the location is super convenient for going to a movie or shopping before or after dinner.
We look forward to going back…maybe even without the kiddos=)
El Arroyo (The Ditch)! 5th street… BOWLING ALLEY BURGER!
Although El Arroyo up and pulled out of Bee Cave, the 5th street location met us with excellent service and enough lunch to bring home a doggie bag.
Among the Tex-Mex fair, the Bowling Alley Burger is one of the very best in Austin!!!
We always enjoy super service, fresh food, and refreshing drinks. I especially love the friendly smiles while my husband is thankful for the Daily Happy Hour specials (ie Two for One burgers…)
Drop by El Arroyo (aka The Ditch) and let them know LakeTravis.org sent ya! Thanks=) Take 5th Street exit off Mopac. Travel one block and turn left on Campbell. You will see the sign on the corner.
Note* their website is under construction and leans toward ‘not so family friendly humor.’ Just as an FYI. Thank you.
Burger Tex, Oak Hill’s local burger joint

16 years in Austin, Mr. and Mrs. Sang Ju greet you with a smile in their casual, clean and friendly restaurant. Boasting fresh (never frozen) choice USDA all beef patties with a menu to please even the vegan pallet. Veggie burgers. Chicken -fried or grilled, catfish, shrimp, so much more.
The food is so good that even the Green Beret’s host their monthly food fest in the Oak Hill location and leave full-n-happy every time! They’ve gifted Burger Tex with an American Flag which hangs proudly on the wall of a semi-private dining room.
Hwy 71 and William Cannon in the Oak Hill Centre. Open Seven days a week. Oh! Be sure to hug multi-lingual Ms. Paula. She’s Burger Tex’s greatest asset!
Bee Cave McD’s offers Free wireless, $1 RedBox, and clean restrooms
McDonald’s, 12514 W Highway 71, Bee Cave, (512) 263-8083
CUSTOMER SERVICE TO THE MAX! Each employee greets us with a smile, a thankful attitude and genuine interest in leaving a positive impression on our family. My husband appreciates the free wireless, the kids like the RedBox. Me? I like being treated with kindness and appreciation. Everybody wins. The rest of the McDonald’s chains have MUCH to learn here…
