What is Labor Day? a message from The Murph

by Julie Jeffcott and her faithful lab/dauchsen mix, Murphy.

What happens on September 22, 2010?  Answer at the end!

During the day, lately it has been in the evening hours, I go for a walk to clear the cobwebs from between my ears and reflect on the day’s events.  Of course I take my mistress along so she can make sure that I do not get into trouble.  She does all of the talking saying hello to everyone we meet.  I greet everyone with a big smile, a wagging tail and a short romp with the other dogs.

While she was visiting with a friend yesterday, I overheard her say that we were going to attend a Labor Day Cook Out.  Of course at the mention of food, I became interested.  What is Labor Day?  After some research on my Puppy Pad, I found out exactly what Labor Day means.

This coming weekend is Labor Day Weekend 2010 and the actual date itself for Labor Day is on Monday September 6.   Many people view Labor Day weekend as the last chance to get out and about before the colder weather comes, a time to have a family get-together but it’s also important to remember why we have Labor Day in the first place.

The day was initiated as a way to celebrate the achievements of American workers and how their hard work made this country great. The day goes right back to 1882 on September 5 in New York City and was organized by the Central Labor Union and the idea of a ‘workingmen’s holiday’ slowly spread to other states, increasing with the rise of labor organizations

This Labor Day turn on the sprinkler and sip some lemonade, but don’t forget to give a toast to those who made it possible.  Without them, there would be no standard of 8 hour workdays and minimum wage!  So whatever you plan on doing to celebrate this week end, remember to hydrate and if you take your pets with you carry a jug of water for them.  We need to hydrate too!

Answer: The Fall Equinox

And, remember, Murphy loves you.
